Pinnacle West Recognized with Prestigious A- Score for Climate Change and Water Security

12/16/2021

Pinnacle West has been recognized for leadership in corporate sustainability by global environmental non-profit CDP, securing scores of A- for tackling climate change, as well as acting to protect water security. Pinnacle West is only one of two North American electric utility companies to achieve Leadership scores in both climate change and water security out of the 140-plus electric utilities that were scored through CDP’s questionnaires in 2021, with nearly 12,000 companies being scored in total.

Through significant demonstrable action on climate change and water security risks, Pinnacle West is amongst the leaders in corporate environmental ambition, action and transparency worldwide and rises to the top among our peer electric utility providers.

CDP’s annual environmental disclosure and scoring process is recognized as the gold standard of corporate environmental transparency. CDP uses a detailed and independent methodology to assess these companies, allocating a score of A to D- based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership.

For Arizona Public Service Co., a subsidiary of Pinnacle West, more transparent environmental disclosures have inspired other businesses in the Phoenix region and strengthened the company's relationship with investors, said Jeffrey Guldner, Pinnacle West's CEO.

"The standardization allows for efficient and effective benchmarking to peers," Guldner told a case study CDP published in October 2021. "We have used our CDP scores in recent annual letters, proxy statements and messaging to our investors as a measurable proof point of our very real water and climate efforts."

Arizona Public Service (APS), the principal subsidiary of Pinnacle West, has set a bold aspirational goal to provide its customers with 100% clean, carbon-free electricity by 2050. “This recognition from CDP underscores our commitment and actions to create a sustainable energy future for Arizona,” said Ann Becker, APS Vice President of Sustainability. “We are honored by the leadership scores, and with this honor comes great responsibility – transforming our clean energy commitment into action.”
