Johnny Penrod is vice president, generation for Arizona Public Service (APS). In this role, he leads APS’s
Generation organization with a focus on safety, reliability and operational excellence across the fleet that serves
customers statewide. Based in Phoenix, APS is Arizona’s largest energy provider and serves about 1.4 million homes
and businesses.
Penrod assumed the vice president role effective Jan. 1, 2026, after serving as the interim leader of
Generation since May while holding the title of senior director of Generation Operations.
An Arizona native and thirdgeneration Arizonan, Penrod began his utility career as summer help at Salt
River Project before bidding into an operator position, where he spent 12 years learning plant operations firsthand.
He joined APS in August 1997 as an auxiliary operator at the Cholla Power Plant and progressed through operations
roles, moving into leadership in 2002.
Over nearly three decades with APS, he has served in Training, as a Corporate Functional Leader, as Plant
Manager at two plants, and as director roles covering Gas & Oil and Coal generation prior to leading the
Generation team.
