Community & Customers

Two of the most important aspects of sustainability are caring for our customers and supporting the community.

As one of the relatively few large companies headquartered in Arizona, our experience serving Arizona has provided us with the knowledge and the partnerships to make a real difference in our state’s communities, economies and the environment.

Long before it became a media buzz word, sustainability has been a critical part of our daily operations at APS. Whether APS employees are volunteering in the community, strengthening the economies of Arizona’s small towns or helping to power one of the fastest growing states in the country, sustainability is, and will continue to be, a constant mindset.

Our unwavering support of the communities we serve is one of the tenets which drives our success, and in these uncertain economic times, the need for our support has never been greater.

Growth has been a way of life here in Arizona for many years. For APS this ongoing expansion is a reality we manage every day. Over the last decade, we’ve added more than 300,000 customers and about 7,500 miles of transmission and distribution wires. However, as Arizona grows bigger, we are focused on ensuring it also grows better. We know that a healthy APS is dependent upon healthy, vibrant communities. That’s why “the communities we serve” is one of the key areas of focus in our company's strategic framework.

Our dedication to Arizona is regularly on display through our financial and in-kind support, as well as our economic development activities and our efforts to assist low-income customers. It is also evident from our focus on delivering energy-efficiency programs and reliable electricity and from our dedication to friendly, knowledgeable customer service.

Our community stewardship is an ongoing strategic effort to make Arizona a better place to live and work. Our collective impact shows we back up our words with actions that make a tangible difference. Consider these numbers:

  • APS employees donate more than 150,000 volunteer hours every year
  • APS routinely has the largest number of Leadership Givers in Valley of the Sun United Way’s annual fundraising campaign
  • APS’ low-income summits have involved more than 300 non-profit organizations to help keep the power on for families in need
  • More than 350 APS employees represent the company on non-profit boards
  • About two dozen APS employees hold some form of public office

"Clearly, community investment is a responsibility we take very seriously. Fortunately, no other responsibility feels so good."

- Tammy McLeod, Vice President and Chief Customer Officer.

Arizona Businesses Advancing Sustainability

In order to help advance sustainable business practices across our community, Pinnacle West partnered with Intel Corporation in 2007 to found a new business association, called Arizona Businesses Advancing Sustainability or AzBAS. During 2008, AzBAS became a formal 501c6 non-profit organization with a membership of over 20 small and large companies.

AzBAS is committed to sustainable practices that promote strong communities, successful businesses, a healthy environment and sound public policy.  Meetings are held quarterly for the primary purpose of holding in-depth dialogues among participants to share, challenge and test sustainability practices in order to build a platform for advancing sustainable business practices adopted by AzBAS members, and a  knowledge base for others needing help in creating and adopting sustainable practices in their companies
