PNW Subsidiaries

APS Energy Services
APS Energy Services is the full-service energy services subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corporation (NYSE:PNW). As APS Energy Services: PNW Subsidiarypart of the Pinnacle West family of companies, APSES energy customers benefit from a cumulative knowledge and experience in energy usage, generation, transmission and distribution, and renewable energy technologies. With an average of 20 years of experience, team members are trusted and knowledgeable experts in the industry.

Sustainability is a core focus of APS Energy Services and the company seeks to promote and implement the efficient use of energy through the development of innovative comprehensive energy solutions, seeking renewable energy alternatives where applicable. Energy projects are designed to upgrade equipment and provide sustainable solutions to reduce carbon footprint; all while conducting work in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.

Through its wholly owned subsidiary, NorthwindTM Phoenix, APS Energy Services markets, designs, constructs, finances and operates district energy systems throughout the Southwest. District energy is an innovative centralized cooling and heating system that utilizes an extensive underground network of pipes to effectively deliver hot and cold water, steam or electricity from a central plant. In 2007, adding to its reputation of keeping much of downtown Phoenix comfortable, Northwind Phoenix began operating a third plant in downtown Phoenix inside the new and expanded Phoenix Convention Center. In 2008, Northwind Phoenix connected new customers to its downtown loop that included Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications and new Taylor Place Student Housing; Sheraton Hotel; and Phoenix Convention Center’s North Building. The downtown Phoenix system currently has 30,000 tons of installed capacity, serving 28 buildings.

In addition to its downtown operations, Northwind Phoenix continues to operate the Arizona State University combined heat and power plant constructed by APS Energy Services, as well as, a 1,200- ton cooling plant at the Arizona State University Polytechnic campus located in the east part of the greater Phoenix area and also constructed by APS Energy Services.

Among its renewable projects:

Solar
APS Energy Services recently completed the installation of a 150KW photovoltaic electrical system on the penthouse and lower roof sections of Arizona State University’s (ASU) Biodesign Institute Buildings A and B on the Tempe Campus. This installation was instrumental in helping ASU obtain a LEED Gold certification level for ASU’s Biodesign Institute Building B.

In 2005, APS Energy Services was responsible for installing the first solar project on the ASU campus -- a 30 KW solar covered parking system on Parking Structure #2.

APS Energy Services is currently working with Sedona Oak Creek Unified School District to provide and install a maximum of 100KW solar photovoltaic system that will include Web-based monitoring equipment to enable real-time and historical electric generation information. The primary purpose of this system is to provide a visualization tool to educate the District in solar energy production and will assist in developing student curriculum to provide education and awareness. This project is part of a larger energy conservation program aimed at reducing utility expenditures by over 30 percent, also being implemented by APS Energy Services.

A solar collector system, necessary piping and associated pumping and controls to offset 16,500 therms of annual natural gas usage was installed at the Signal Peak Olympic Aquatic Center as part of a larger comprehensive energy program at Central Arizona College. The system interfaces with the existing pumping and heating system to ensure an adequate source of heat when the solar system cannot provide for full heating load.

The City of Albuquerque, New Mexico partnered with APS Energy Services to install solar pool heating systems at five facilities. The solar water heating systems have resulted in a reduction of over 52,250 therms in annual natural gas consumption.

Digester
APS Energy Services constructed a cogeneration unit at the City of Flagstaff Wildcat Hill Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The plant provides the Wildcat Hill WWTP with a biogas reciprocating engine intended to be fueled in whole using digester gas (methane) available from Wildcat Hill WWTP. The result of this cogeneration process will be a maximum electric utility offset of 292 KW of electric power at a 7,000 foot elevation at full load.

“As our name says, we’re an energy services company,” said Jim Lodge, president, APS Energy Services. “Our mission is to be a premier energy service provider. We achieve this by helping our customers meet their strategic objectives through innovative comprehensive energy solutions. As energy prices continue to rise and the increasing importance of taking responsibility for a sustainable environment, energy efficiency projects and the deployment of renewable technologies is a cost-effective way to assist in achieving our customers’ goals.”

EPS Energy Star Partnership
APS Energy Services (APSES) recently announced a fundamental commitment to protect the environment by becoming an ENERGY STAR partner.

APSES, through its voluntary partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Program, will work to improve energy efficiency and combat climate change. APSES believes that a strategic, corporate energy management program will help to further reinforce the company’s commitment to energy conservation and aid in preserving the environment for future generations.

“As a provider of innovative energy conservation and renewable solutions, we feel that it is important to ‘walk the walk’ as corporate environmental stewards,” said Lodge. "This partnership formalizes all that we have been doing as an organization to date, and we are proud to be a partner in this important program.”
