Awards & Recognitions

In 2008, Pinnacle West was recognized by several leading sustainability rating groups for our efforts in corporate responsibility and sustainability. This includes being named as a Global 100 Most Sustainable Company in the World for the fifth straight year by Corporate Knights. We also received a "Best in Class" designation for environmental and social performance since 2006 by Storebrand Investments, and were named to the the Dow Jones North American and United States Sustainability Index for the fourth straight year.  We believe that continuing to receive these recognitions over a period of time is a valuable external validation of our ongoing efforts to improve our programs and respond to evolving issues. Our long standing culture of "doing the right thing" anchors our current programs that are leading the industry.

  • Pinnacle West was named one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World by Corporate Knights at the 2009 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This is the fifth year in a year that Pinnacle West has been named a Global 100 company, making the list every year since its inception in 2005. 
  • In 2008, APS received the electric utility industry's highest honor, The Edison Award, for developing a landmark system that monitors major transformers in near-real-time. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) gives this award each year to honor an electric utility for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the power industry.
  • Pinnacle West has the highest rating (AAA) and is ranked in the top two of utilities in the United States by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors in a comprehensive analysis on the U.S. Electric Power Sector covering the environmental, social and governance factors of the largest publicly-traded utility companies.  Pinnacle West has received the AAA rating from Innovest each time since Innovest started evaluating the company in 2001.
  •  Pinnacle West was listed in the 2008 Dow Jones North America Sustainability Index  and the 2008 Dow Jones United States Sustainability Index as a sustainability leader in the electric industry indexes, for the fourth year in a row.
  • Pinnacle West was one of just two utilities in the United States and 14 utilities worldwide to earn the "best in class" status in 2009 by Storebrand Socially Responsible Investment for Pinnacle West's leading environmental and social performance. Pinnacle West has been on the Storebrand Best of Class list since 2006.
  • APS was named EPA/DOE 2009 Energy Star Partner of the Year from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the APS Energy Star Homes program.  This is the third year in a row that APS has won the EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year.  In 2008, APS was EPA Energy Star Partner of the year for its Homes program, and in 2007  it was for our Residential Lighting Program.
  • APS was named the No. 1 energy utility for information technology (IT) innovation according to the 2008 edition of the InformationWeek 500. Pinnacle West/APS also ranked among the top 10 overall U.S. companies and highest among those based in Arizona.

  • The Better Business Bureau (BBB) awarded APS with its 2008 Business Ethics Award for APS' business ethics approach and our "Doing the Right Thing" corporate philosophy.
  • For the 12th straight year, APS won the Tree Line USA Award by the Arizona Community Tree Council in recognition of APS' leadership in urban forestry and environmental stewardship.
  • APS Energy Services was voted a 2008 ‘Best Place to Work’ in the small-sized category (50-99 employees).by the Phoenix Business Journal and BestCompaniesAZ, LLC.
  • APS was named Corporation of the Year by the Grand Canyon Minority Supplier Development Council.
  • "Friend of Phoenix" award from the city of Phoenix. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said he was recognizing APS "For being an outstanding partner and for your absolute commitment to programs such as solar energy, CFLs, Earth Hour and the city of Phoenix Electric Light Parade. Your heartfelt historic and ongoing dedication benefits all our residents and the environment we share. Thank you for living up to your corporate name."
  • Leadership Givers' Award from the Valley of the Sun United Way for most employees giving to United Way at the leadership contribution level.
  • Northwind Phoenix, a subsidiary of APS Energy Services, received the System of the Year Award from the International District Energy Association (IDEA). The award is the top honor IDEA bestows on a public or privately owned district energy system.
  • APS was named the "2008 Large Business of the Year" by the Douglas Chamber of Commerce.
