Anyone venturing near APS' 501-502 Complex in downtown Phoenix would be hard pressed not to notice a large bus with the words “Pure Hydrogen = Zero Emissions” painted its side, "getiing gas".

Arizona’s first hydrogen-powered bus is on the move in Arizona. The ECObus is powered by a fuel cell that runs on pure hydrogen. ECOtality, Inc. has teamed up with APS to bring the ECObus to Arizona to educate the public on the use of renewable energies. The project represents the start of a partnership between APS and ECOtality, which develops and commercializes renewable energy technologies.
The ECObus is Arizona’s first hydrogen fuel cell bus. It’s also a mobile learning center promoting APS-developed educational materials including the APS Road to Renewable Energy.
“APS is a logical partner for ECOtality to further our promotion of clean technologies,” said Jonathan Read, CEO, ECOtality. “By working with APS, we are able to educate the public and demonstrate that hydrogen is a viable alternative fuel that produces zero emissions.”
Along with educational materials, APS provides services and hydrogen fuel for the ECObus at the APS Hydrogen Refueling Station in downtown Phoenix.
The ECObus comes complete with an audiovisual system and interactive workstations to educate the community ─ from school children to civic decision makers ─ about hydrogen’s potential as an alternative to carbon fuel-burning vehicles as well as renewable energy options.
“APS is committed to supporting natural- and clean-energy development for the state of Arizona. In addition, this partnership presents a good opportunity to further educate students and the public about renewable energy,” said Peter Johnston, manager, technology development.
