EHS Training

In 2005, our employees completed more than 69,000 EHS related training courses. This included training in 323 different compliance related areas. Through a detailed profiling process, employees are assigned required topics based on the type of work they do. This ensures a safe and healthy work environment, while allowing the company to maintain compliance.

As represented in the table below, the majority of the compliance related training topics were required by OSHA, followed by those required by the company or one of the following agencies: the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Nevada Department of Business and Industry (NV).

Employees in field operations jobs completed an average of eight EHS trainings over the year, while office workers typically completed between one to two trainings per year.

EHS Excellence Awards
In addition to normal employee merit and incentive recognition, outstanding individual environmental, health and safety performances and initiatives are recognized through the APS Environmental, Heath and Safety Excellence Awards program. In 2005, 40 individual employees and two employee teams received EHS Excellence Awards. The honored employees were also recognized in our internal company communications.

Employees can recognize each other for EHS excellence, based on Pinnacle West’s EHS values, which are:

  • Ensuring a safe and healthy work environment
  • Being an environmental leader

The EHS Excellence Awards Program’s goals are to:

  • encourage employees to recognize each other, individuals and teams, specifically for embracing our company values through EHS excellence, with increasingly greater participation by employees who do not have primary roles and responsibilities in EHS
  • be accessible to areas of the company, easy to use, immediate, flexible and meaningful
  • distinguish those who have contributed a significant or extraordinary amount of EHS value with the Quarterly EHS Excellence Award of Distinction
  • provide a CEO EHS Excellence Award to those who meet the stringent criteria established for this ultimate level of recognition
