At Pinnacle West, we believe financial success is an integral component in the concept of sustainability. Smart investors and consumers alike are finding that the other two pillars of sustainability — environmental and social performance — can impact a company’s bottom line.
As a fiscally-responsible organization, which places great stock in operating our businesses with integrity, we believe that a competitive advantage can be built through the effective management of risk and opportunity.
While Pinnacle West's financial reporting is typically done through our Annual Report and SEC filings, which can be found at our Web site: pinnaclewest.com, this Corporate Responsibility Report provides additional information for business analysis. It provides details regarding our environmental, safety and social policies, organizational goals and performance, which have a direct impact on the financial information provided in the standard financial reporting.
In some instances, the information in this Corporate Responsibility Report can be quantified. More often than not, many sustainability indicators are more qualitative in nature and may not easily lend themselves to standard financial reporting. They are, however, critical indicators of company performance, and translate to the bottom line.
In this report, we strive to provide information on Pinnacle West's sustainable practices which impact our economic performance, such as our practice of selling coal ash waste streams rather than disposing of them, having an aggressive investment recovery program and improving efficiencies in our generating units in order to reduce costs and emissions. We also provide financial details on issues such as spending on minority and women owned businesses, and charitable donations (in Social Performance section), and have a detailed discussion on climate change which may have future economic impacts.
More discussion of these forward thinking issues can be found in our standard financial reports. In addition, discussion of pension and other employee benefit funding status can be found in the 2005 PNW Annual Report (link below).
