The company recognizes transportation safety is an intrinsic component in our operations which involve commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). These types of operations are also regulated by both federal and state motor carrier safety regulations, specifically, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
The company operates about 1,500 CMVs, including towing units, and manages driver qualification files, including medical files, for about 850 drivers in our DOT compliance program. The company motor carrier safety compliance program addresses critical transportation-related components such as DOT hours of service, driver qualification, driver’s vehicle inspections, CMV inspection and maintenance, hazardous materials transportation and CMV driver training.
Since motor carrier safety regulations are minimum standards, the company has, in some instances, implemented more stringent requirements than the federal and state standards. One example is limiting the speed limit for company CMVs to 55 miles per hour instead of the higher posted speed limits. Another example is the CMV inspection and maintenance program in which CMVs are inspected twice per year instead of once per year as required by the U.S. DOT.
Despite some unfavorable factors such as high public visibility, a very active regulatory atmosphere and increased transportation security mandates by the Transportation Security Administration (the result of the September 11 terrorist attack), the company continues to consistently maintain a “satisfactory” rating, the highest rating granted by the U.S. DOT.
