APS Ergonomics Program
In 1989, APS’ Executive Safety Board approved a structured ergonomics stress reduction program for employees. The program was created to minimize the potential losses from ergonomic stress related injuries and illnesses which were becoming more prevalent in the company as well as in industry at large.
Office Ergonomics
The office ergonomics program encompasses assessments at individual employees’ work stations. As the program developed, it evolved from having outside vendors conducting assessments to an in-house team developing a training program. The Office Ergonomics Training Module is available for leaders to use in training their workers.
Tool User Ergonomics
When the program began in 1989, a Tool Task Force was formed to evaluate new tools for transmission and distribution operations. This group assists with ergonomic stress reduction consultation on tools in use and those being evaluated. This group has become the Tool Approval Committee of Energy Delivery.
Since the inception of the Ergonomics Program, there have been several ergonomic tool improvements based on their work including ergonomic stress reducing shovels, dead weight hammers, anti-vibration gloves and battery/hydraulic operated cutting and crimping tools. The company also developed a voluntary Working Stretch program. The stretching program was modified for plant maintenance workers at our Fossil Generation Power Plants and was implemented at all power plants on a voluntary basis.
