Employee Training

Pinnacle West University
The company encourages employee continuing education through external course offerings and internally through our Pinnacle West University. Pinnacle West University offers more than 750 online courses covering business topics relevant to our industry and specific disciplines.

Courses range in topic from safety to ethics to diversity and are available to employees with Internet access from the office or home. In 2004, 21 instructor-led classes took place in which approximately 300 employees participated. There were also more than 1,100 courses completed online in which approximately 800 employees participated.

EHS Training
In 2004, our employees completed more than 55,000 training courses covering about 300 EHS topics. Through a detailed profiling process, employees are assigned required topics based on the type of work they do. This ensures a safe and healthy work environment, as well as training compliance.

As represented in the table below, the vast majority of the topics were required by OSHA, followed by those required by the company or one of the following agencies: the Department of Transportation (DOT), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Nevada Department of Business and Industry (NV).

The following table provides samplings of 2004 EHS training completion data from two field areas and two office areas. Topics are tracked as required or not required. Required training topics are those mandated by a regulation.

To enhance safety, health and environmental awareness, training materials are made available for non-required topics. The completion of these non-required topics demonstrates our commitment to go beyond compliance, distinguishing us from other companies.

EHS Brownbags
In 2004, Pinnacle West continued to offer employees informal educational opportunities through its EHS brownbag meetings – luncheon seminars on environmental, health, safety and new technology issues to educate and motivate employees. The lunch seminars are open to all employees. In 2004, 200 employees attended six seminars.

EHS Excellence Awards

Outstanding individual environmental, health and safety performances and initiatives are recognized and rewarded through the Environmental, Heath and Safety Excellence Awards program. In 2004, 99 EHS Excellence Awards were given for a variety of accomplishments. The honored employees were also recognized in our internal company communications.

Employees can recognize each other for EHS (Environmental, Health and Safety) excellence, based on Pinnacle West’s EHS values, which are:

  • Ensuring a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Being an environmental leader.

The EHS Excellence Awards Program’s goals are to:

  • Encourage employees to recognize each other, individuals and teams, specifically for embracing our company values through EHS excellence, with increasingly greater participation by employees who do not have primary roles and responsibilities in EHS.
  • Be accessible to areas of the company, easy to use, immediate, flexible and meaningful.
  • Distinguish those who have contributed a significant or extraordinary amount of EHS value with the Quarterly EHS Excellence Award of Distinction.
  • Provide a CEO EHS Excellence Award to those who meet the stringent criteria established for this ultimate level of recognition.
