Charitable Giving and Volunteerism

In 2004, the company and its employees donated about $6.5 million to charitable organizations.

APS contributes to nonprofit organizations with a 501(c) (3) Internal Revenue Service tax-exempt status. The APS Foundation was established to help organizations fund projects in the areas of Health and Human Services, Community Development, Education, Arts and Culture and Environment. An extensive list of the organizations the company gives to as well as guidelines for giving can be found online at aps.com.

Last year, APS employees contributed more than 127,000 hours to community-based organizations. APS has a policy of donating $125 to any organization at which an employee volunteers a minimum of 25 hours. Employees can request volunteer matching gift grants for up to five different organizations per year.

Our employees set another mark for giving in the most recent Valley of the Sun United Way campaign, with the company taking top honors in several giving categories, including Leadership Giving, where more than 1,000 employees donated at least $1,000 each. Overall, Pinnacle West and APS employees donated more than $3.3 million to the United Way’s 2004 Community Service Fund (CSF).

Pinnacle West is honored by the Valley of the Sun United Way

Our employees serve as volunteer participants in a wide range of community organizations, often accepting leadership responsibilities. Among the most notable are the Chambers of Commerce, the United Way, the Boys and Girls Club and the Fiesta Bowl.

Employee donations and matching shareholder dollars have averaged $60,000 annually to Project SHARE (Service to Help Arizonans with Energy Relief). SHARE is a partnership with Salt River Project, Southwest Gas and The Salvation Army designed to help those who are unable to pay their utility bill.

Through sponsorships of arts and culture we provide opportunities for “at-risk” schools to visit and take part in programs offered by local museums and theaters. Our employees routinely volunteer at local schools and take part in Junior Achievement.

APS’ volunteer efforts aren’t limited to Arizona. In 2004, APS lent a much needed hand to Florida’s Progress Energy during its hurricane recovery efforts. When a hurricane hit Clearwater, Fla., APS sent 11 crews (41 employees) and 16 vehicles to help Progress Energy restore power to homes and businesses 2,500 miles from Arizona. These actions did not go unnoticed by the utility industry. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) presented the company with the association’s Emergency Assistance Award. EEI presents the Emergency Assistance Award annually to recognize outstanding efforts in assisting another utility in restoring electric service that had been disrupted by severe weather conditions or other natural events.

Return to Community

"For many years, APS has partnered with Valley of the Sun United Way to help address our community’s most critical human care needs. The continued generosity of APS and its employees helps ensure that our Valley’s seniors receive nutritious home-delivered meals, quality after school programs are available for our children and that adults receive the support they need to become more self-sufficient.

This past year, APS employees demonstrated they have the power to make it happen! Their desire to make a difference in our community made it possible to raise nearly $3 million for Valley of the Sun United Way helping to improve lives in the areas of Learning, Empowering and Caring.

Without true community leaders like APS, United Way would not be able to improve lives throughout the Valley. We truly appreciate APS and its employees for their leadership and commitment to our community."
