My Safety, My Choice Safety is one of our overriding values and no accident is acceptable. We have held a goal of zero preventable recordable accidents since 1995. To achieve that goal, we encourage and support leaders and employees to create safe work environments. Our focus on safety continues and while the number of recordable accidents remained the same as in 2001, the severity of the incidents was down significantly. This improvement, however, was negated as we lost one of our employees in a traffic accident on icy roads in early 2002. Recognizing that a truly safe environment requires individual accountability, the company’s 2002 safety campaign was titled "My Safety, My Choice." The initiative encouraged employees to choose safe work practices. An important aspect of the company’s safety philosophy is customizing programs according to work locations based on the foundations of:
- Correctly applying the rules
- Recognizing potential hazards in the work environment
- Further developing employees’ safety skills through training
The campaign resulted in a second consecutive year of improved safety performance. While the total number of recordable injuries remained flat, we saw fewer lost days and decreased severity. The Energy Delivery and Sales organization reduced their total number of injuries by 15 percent, down to 39 in 2002 from 46 in 2001 — its safest year ever.
Our Internal Communications department promotes and encourages health and safety programs and practices. Internal communications vehicles include internal news publications, a daily electronic newsletter, general safety meetings, job-specific safety meetings, training and safety interventions.
