Helping Hands APS lends ‘BOTHANDS’ to strengthening the Flagstaff community An adequate supply of affordable housing is an essential component of stable, self-sufficient families, strong communities and a healthy business environment. Unknown to most is the fact that the city of Flagstaff most often is recorded to have the highest cost of living in Arizona. In fact, Flagstaff’s cost of living ranks 15 percent higher than the national average, making affordable housing a significant challenge for low- to moderate-income families. In keeping with a rich tradition of serving the community, APS has partnered with a Flagstaff-based organization dedicated to helping increase the supply of safe and affordable housing in the Flagstaff area through ongoing construction projects.
Building Opportunity Through Housing and Neighborhood and Development Services, Inc. (BOTHANDS), is a non-profit organization helping many northern Arizona families to build for the future. “APS and its employees are huge assets to our Flagstaff community and invaluable community partners,” said BOTHANDS Assistant Director Devonna McLaughlin. “APS employees volunteer their time and expertise to ensure homeless women and children survivors of domestic violence have the stability, safety and support they need to escape violence and make lasting changes in their lives. Support from APS enables BOTHANDS to continue to meet its mission and to strengthen our community. APS is truly exceptional in its dedication to serving our community, and we are fortunate to have their support.” The organization first joined with APS in 2004 for the “A Home of Their Own” breakfast, a fundraiser aimed at reaching out to business leaders, organizations and the community. Thanks in part to APS’ help, more than 175 organizations and individuals pledged their support for BOTHANDS. Ever since, APS has continued to support the organization. FAST FACT Arizona's population is projected to grow to nearly 9.5 million people by 2025. | “We are grateful for APS’ ongoing support of BOTHANDS because it enables our organization to provide safe, decent and affordable housing to a variety of people in the community who make Flagstaff the place they want to call home,” said BOTHANDS Executive Director Helen Hudgens Ferrell. “On behalf of the homeless women who are transformed through our transitional housing program and the first time homebuyer opening the door to homeownership, I would like to thankـAPS and its employees for building stronger, safer families.”
