Environmental Standard Certifications

To ensure we operate our facilities consistent with the highest environmental quality standards, APS has been implementing an environmental management system (EMS) and obtaining certification of the EMS under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Standards since 2011. We first obtained ISO 14001 certification for the EMS used at all of our gas-fired generating facilities in 2011. This was followed by the ISO certification for our coal-fired facilities in 2012 and the Deer Valley Service Center, our primary transmission and distribution service center, in 2013. In 2015, we obtained ISO 14001 certification for all of our Phoenix metro area service centers. In 2016, six of our Transmission Distribution & Customer service centers obtained ISO 14001 certification. In 2017, we plan to expand our ISO 14001 certified EMS at four state district service centers in Arizona.

Implementing an ISO 14001 certified EMS is an important step in our continuous improvement goals. So far, our ISO 14001 program has helped to:

  • Identify and control the environmental impact of our activities, products and services;
  • Standardize our operational approach to managing environmental issues at our facilities;
  • Improve our environmental performance and reduce environmental risks; and
  • Implement a systematic approach to setting environmental objectives and targets, achieving these and demonstrating that they have been achieved.
